Machines are often associated with speed, velocity and maneuverability. This is particularly true of Robots. Understanding speed and velocity can help a designer avoid time consuming and costly mistakes. The ability to analyze the performance can improve your competitive advantage and increase your design functionality. Knowledge, or lack of it, is a design constraint. Designers with more knowledge make better design decisions more quickly than unknowledgeable designers. Carefully work through this short unit on motion. The design and fabrication of effective machines depends on your knowledge of how things move, and the forces that move them.
Educational Resources
This lesson includes several useful educational resources. The following list will describe these resources and how to locate them:
Reading Assignment
This 9 page document entitled Motion Speed and Velocity describes the key terms and concepts necessary for a basic understanding of speed and velocity. This document also describes the mathematical formulas associated with the analysis of speed and velocity. A description of suggested activities can be found at the end of this document. This document can be downloaded from the Learning Tools section on the top right corner of this page.
Slide Presentation
This 23 slide presentation illustrates the key concepts described in the reading assignment described above. This slide show should be used to open the unit on Speed and Velocity. The advantage of online resources like slide presentations, is that students can refer back to them whenever necessary. This slide presentation is entitled Motion Speed and Velocity and can be downloaded from the Learning Tools section on the top right corner of this page.
Work Sheets
Two work sheets are also available in the learning tools section of this lesson. These work sheets are titled:
Speed and Velocity Work Sheet
Using Vectors Work Sheet
These work sheets reinforce the necessary analytical skills associated with Speed and Velocity. They can be completed with the entire class participating, or as individual assignments.
Assessment Tools
These two assessment tools are intended as examples of the type of tools that can be used to gauge a student's understanding of the key concepts covered in the lesson.
Calculating Average Speed Quiz and Understanding Speed and Velocity
can be used to gauge student's comprehension and skill development with respect to several key concepts covered in this lesson. Best teaching practices dictate that final assessment tools be developed by the teacher. Final assessment should always include several considerations including but not limited to Notebook Evaluation, Participation in Activities,Work Sheet Performance,Quizzes and Tests.
Solution Sheets
The document entitled Calculating Average Speed Solutions is the answer sheet that accompanies the work sheet by the same title. This answer sheet can also be found in the Learning Tools section on the top right corner of this page.
